Dolomite |
Litologia
The quarried Dolimite type is saccharoidal
dolomite limestone with a white-fleshy colour, known in the literature as
"Pietra o Dolomia di Zandobbio".
It is presumed to be from the "Hettangian" era, contemporary to the
"Dolomite at Conchodon". The material is currently mainly used to produce "Granulites"
of various sizes.
In the past however, until Roman times, it was used as an ornamental stone
of a certain value; see for example the "Palazzo del Provveditorato" in
"Piazza della Libertà" at Bergamo – lower town -, the Cantarini fountain,
the library at Bergamo – upper town - and the Mondadori headquarters at
Segrate. |
The
white Dolomite extracted from the Zandobbio quarry is ground and graded into
a vast range of sizes that satisfy the demands of:
-
Zootechnic
industries
-
Ceramic
and flooring industries
-
Ready
mixed and mortar products
-
Chemical
industries
-
Glass
industries
-
Iron
and steel making industries

Characteristics and
Commercial Use
|
The
Dolimite type considered is defined as calcareous dolomite. Consequently it
is comprised mainly of double calcium carbonate and magnesium with a lower
order of calcium carbonate.
|
The
material has the following fundamental characteristics:
- it is
easily reduced to small grains or powder as it is medium hard.
- it has
a light colour
- and
finally, does not contain inopportune accessory chemical elements
|
The
granulometry of the worked materials ranges from the lowest size of powder
(0-0.1 mm) to chips (30-60 mm) with seven intermediary classifications.
Ther industrial uses are manifold and can be summarised
into the following sectors and values:
- the glass and
ceramic industries
- the chemical, paper,
plastic and paint industries as well as in agriculture in fertilisers
and as de-acidifiers for the land.
- as inert material in
concrete, ballast and road surfacing.
- the coating and decoration industries
- the binder and casting industries
